2025 Dressed To Kilt Design Competition Winner
Hannah McDonald
“I wanted to build upon country couture. Scottish countryside, animals and plants, inside down thistle with flair at the bottom. Horns but then moving into the more countryside pursuits, inspiration.
This title is in reference to the immortal line "Weel done, Cutty-sark!" from Robert Burns’ Tam O’Shanter, where Tam enrages a coven by heckling one of the witches’ scanty skirt.
I also looked into the tartan I used in my design. It is Stewart of Appin Hunting Ancient. I had a brief look into the history of this clan. They are a branch of the royal Stewarts, which I believe means a shared lineage with Mary Queen of Scots. It also looks as though they played a significant role in the Jacobite rebellion, fighting in both the battle of Sheriffmuir and Culloden. This is an interesting coincidence because the style of kilt jacket which most heavily influenced by waistcoat design was the Sheriffmuir doublet.”
